Laon, France, May 20, 1940

Mission accomplished. Against difficult odds the German offensive through northern France has been halted.

'Group Aux' drove north through LAON towards GUISE. On the way forward reconnaissance units were engaged and destroyed. After a brief battle the Oise River was crossed and the siege of GUISE started. The Germans kept sending in reinforcements, and the city didn't fall until the 20th of May. 'Group Core 1' drove from RHEIMS towards LAON before turning NW towards MONTCORNET. Battles raged for long around Sisione with the Germans attacking both our flanks. In the end things quieted down and with the arrival of group 'Aux 2' the final drive for MONTCORNET and MARLE could start. The Germans fought hard for MONTCORNET, but the 1st and 2nd infantry regiment as well as the 1st Tank regiment came out successful. MARLE fell easier to combined infantry and armored units. No clear frontline exist and German units have been spotted as far forward as LAON.

Hornoy, France, May 30, 1940

Mission accomplished. The German drive towards Paris has been stopped and new defensive positions constructed at the Somme River.

The counterattack was carried out using two battle groups.
East: (2nd TK, 2nd Inf, 1st and 3rd Art, 1st AT and a bunch of aux units) The group broke up from their positions at Poix, cleared the German minefields and prepared to cross the river running west of Amiens. The German positions on the east bank of the river were strong, but the 2nd Tank regiment paved the way. The objective south of Amiens was taken easily. During the attack the German were constantly pressing against the northern and western flank. The men of the AT regiments proved themselves and a leader was promoted in the 1st AT battalion.
West: (1st TK, 1st, 3rd and 4th Inf, 2nd Art, 2nd and 3rd AT, 1st AD and most of the aux units) The group ignored orders from HQ and broke up from HORNOY immediately. Fierce battles took place north of the city when 'West' stumbled into a couple of German armored and infantry divisions. The 1st Tank regiment saved the day and threw the German back. The battle group continued northwest, took Osiement and closed in on the objective at ABBEVILLE. The time schedule was hard, and the group barely missed a brilliant victory.

In the south the German pressed hard against the airfield and HORNOY. At both places I had prepared defensive positions and I was able to hold the line.

Kufra, North Africa, February 20, 1940

Mission accomplished. The Italian outpost at KUFRA has been taken and the Italian attack on AYN ZUWAYYAH has been repelled.
The main part of the French 3rd Armored corps broke up from AYN ZUWAYYAH and pushed north towards KUFRA. On the way a few Italian roadblocks and mine fields had to be cleared, and the troops was experiencing constant air raids. The AD battalion tried hard to suppress the Italian air force but was unsuccessful. Finally Italian infantry carried out several attacks on the flanks of the column. Short before KUFRA the attack came to a standstill due to lack of strength. Progress was not obtained again before reinforcements came up. The final strike for the NW objective went well, but again my forces barely missed a brilliant victory.
In the west the 1st French infantry regiment drove north and took the Italian controlled village of MA'TAN BISHARAH.
In the south the 2nd and 3rd AT regiment and the 4th infantry regiment successfully defended AYN ZUWAYYAH and the nearby airfield.

Bir Hakeim, North Africa, June, 1942

Mission accomplished. The city of Bir Hakeim has been held against several axis attacks. During the first days of the battle Luftwaffe conducted several air raids and wrecked havoc amongst the artillery units. The German Ju's concentrated on the 1st AD regiment and I had to order it to retreat to Bir Hakeim to refit. Reorganized the AD regiment took up the fight and shot down most axis planes. The axis ground attacks were carried out by the Italian Trieste division attacking from the north, 15th Panzer attacking from the east and 90th light attacking from the west. Only the attacks from 90th light came close the city centre. The rest were easily repelled by the AT and tank regiments. I deployed the 1st and 2nd Tank, 3rd infantry, 1st AD, 1st and 2nd artillery and 1st and 3rd AT regiments. I lost OS points on both artillery and the AD units. On the upside the AD gun gained three bars and most other units 1 or 2. In the north the 3rd Artillery regiment gained more than a bar shooting at minefields.

Fondouk el Aouareb, North Africa, January, 1942

Mission accomplished. The axis attacks on the Fondouk pass and nearby passes have been stopped.

On January 3rd Luftwaffe conducted a major air raid on the French positions around FONDOUK EL AOUAREB. The attack was followed up by the German 47th Grenadier. As a result of the combined attack the French garrison was decimated. The city however was retaken and the 47th Grenadier regiment severely mauled when reinforcements (1st Tank, 1st and 3rd infantry and 2nd artillery) moved in from the east. Additional reinforcements needed as the German 190th Panzer battalion has been spotted to the east.
The Italian 1st (Superga) division conducted small attacks on the oasis east of Pichon. The attacks were easily repelled. The Italians succeeded in capturing a nearby pass, but that was quickly recaptured.

The round was not very hard. I made a last turn BV and got a M8 75mm M2 as reward.

Faid, North Africa, February, 1943

Mission accomplished. The Axis strike towards the Faid pass and SIDI BOU ZID has been stopped. Furthermore SIDI KHALIF and the crossing at WADI LEBEN has been conquered.

Battle group north (2nd TK, 2nd AT, 1st, 3rd and 4th infantry, 1st AD, 2nd and 3rd artillery) constructed defensive positions in the Faid pass and awaited the German attack. The attack by KG Pfeiffer was easily stopped and the battle group went on the attack and secured SIDI KHALIF. Additional units from KG Pfeiffer showed up and ferocious fighting raged around the city. The German even brought in a Tiger battalion that I managed to destroy most of when it drove into SIDI KHALIF. The infantry regiments are worn out and reinforcements are needed.

Battle group south (the rest) slowly pushed south towards WADI LEBEN. The German KG Gruen was easily destroyed and I prepared for the final attack at the wadi. The Germans however threw in another KG (KG Strempel) and tough fighting started. When the American 1st Armored division arrived things cleared up and my forces stormed the objective.

Bou Arada, North Africa, April, 1943

Mission accomplished. The German positions around Bou Arada have been taken.

In the east the Free French infantry pushed north through the hills and captured Pont du Fahs. Backed up by two artillery batteries the 1st Tank regiment crossed the Kebir River and overran the positions at Bou Arada.
In the west the 2nd Tank regiment, followed by infantry, crossed the Siliana River and overwhelmed the German defenders. The German had deployed an AT regiment at the Siliana river and they held out for a long time.

Missed the BV with two turns. With some knowledge a BV is definitely possible.

Mission accomplished. Tunis has fallen and the German Africa Corps has surrendered!

The battle was fought with two battle groups. The battle opened with an artillery barrage on PONT-DU-FAHS from their French positions in the hills south of the city. The barrage was followed up with infantry and tanks assaulting the city. At the same time the forces at BOU ARADA attacked north and engaged the 10th Pz division north of the city. The panzer division was quickly and the French forces pushed north bypassing some German AT guns. The 1st tank regiment pushed north on the east side of the city, when a couple of tanks from the 5th Pz division attacked. The German attack was broken and the first bridge over the Kebir River was taken. The final strike towards Tunis went easy and the French infantry overran the city.

In the east the 4th infantry 2nd artillery regiment together aux forces moved slowly across the desert towards ST. MARIE. The Germans attacked, but with weak forces. Just I was ready to launch the final attack on the city the Germans attacked my flank. The 1st tank regiment was called back and quickly overran the enemy forces. Soon thereafter St. MARIE came under French control.

Briefing to French Army HQ from the commander of the 3rd French armored corps

Cassino, Italy, January, 1944

Mission accomplished. Height (H470) at the Rapido River and the important heights around Atina have been captured.

The main French assault force was composed of the 1st Tank, 1st and 3rd infantry, 1st and 3rd infantry and 1st recon regiments. The group crossed the Rapido River at Sant' Elia and pushed north along the Secco River. German AT guns fired at the troops from Mt. Belvedere and German Artillery were shelling the troops from positions in the mountains. The French artillery played an important role softening the French defenses before the infantry from the 1st and 3rd regiment went on the attack. The assault went well and H470. The strength of the formation was deteriorating but IU ordered the attack continued to the west. The forces fought with great skill and the height south of Atina was secured. Now however the German launched a fierce counterattack with several mountain troops. They concentrated their attacks on the 3rd infantry regiment that ran out of ammo and was wiped out. The rest of the formation attacked the German forces and were able to kill most of them. The forces were also capable of laying artillery fire on the westernmost objective, where the French paratroopers were fighting.

A secondary French formation (2nd Tank, 4th infantry and 2nd artillery) moved around the Rapido river and attacked directly towards Atina. German resistance was hard and progress was slow. Still the formation managed to break through to Atina and capture their objectives.

The newly created French paratrooper regiment proved their worth and secured the westernmost objective in a daring airborne operation.

Itri, Italy, May, 1944

Mission accomplished. The assigned objectives have been captured and the German forces in the area have surrendered.

Before captured the objectives an intense battle raged. The battle was concentrated on three fronts.
The strongest group (1st Tank, 1st and 2nd artillery, 1st infantry and 1st recon) moved out from their positions around Sant' Ambrogio and moved northwest along the Liri River. The German 131st and 132nd as well as armored units tried to cross the river and attack the moving column. They were however thrown back and crushed. The strength of the battle group was diminishing but the forces managed to capture PONTECORVO and wipe out the 134th infantry division.
In the south a large aux group (349th and 350th US infantry division and several French infantry regiments) and a few core units (2nd Tank and 3rd artillery). The group crossed the Garigliano River and attacked Minturno. Things were going well until the Germans lauched a massive counterattack. 171st and 194th came down from the mountains and 15th Panzer attacked along the coast. Several aux units were wiped out before the situation was stabilized. A small group moved north and secured ANSONIA while another group moved west and took ITRI.
The Germans in the area concentrated their attacks on Castelforte and Sant' Ambrogio. I was expecting this so I set up a defensive perimeter with the weakest core units and some aux units. This was sufficient to stop the attack.

The paratroopers embarked over TAVERNA and easily secured the objectives. Aux colonial infantry embarked at the northern airfield and marched down to TAVERNA but did not take part in the battle.

Elba, Italy, June, 1944

Mission accomplished. The islands of Elba and Pianosa have been captured and the German forces have been forced to surrender.

The island of PIANOSA was captured by the 5th French infantry regiment and the two aux paratrooper battalions. That was sufficient to overwhelm the garrison.

My forces made two large landings on Elba itself. The biggest landing took place at Campo Nell'Elba. First wave composed off the 4th infantry and the 1st tank regiment. The infantry moved west towards MARCIANA. Luftwaffe caused heavy casualties among the ranks and the regiment had to regroup and wait for reinforcements before capturing the city. The 1st tank regiment quickly overran a couple of infantry battalions and bypassed the bunkers. The same happened at the airfield and PORTOFERRAIO where several units were overrun.
The second landing (2nd Tank, 1st infantry and 1st artillery) took place at Capoliveri. The artillery regiment was severely damaged before landing, but the engineers nicely made way capturing Capoliveri and PORTOFERRAIO.

The paratroopers embarked over the mountain objective and had no problems securing it.

Marseilles, France, August, 1944

Mission accomplished. The ports of Toulon and Marseilles and surrounding objectives have been captured.

The battle formed around three main fronts.

A small group made of 2nd and 3rd tank, 5th infantry and 3rd artillery moved from 'South'. Several German infantry units counterattacked and a heavy artillery barrage forced the infantry regiment to retreat. The two tank regiments continued, captured TOULON with naval support and defended the city against several counterattacks. The Germans launched massive attacks on 'South', but the 6th colonial infantry, the 3rd AT regiment and the 5th artillery regiment held out nicely and in the end went on the attack recapturing the central airfield. PARQUERALLES was taken early by my paratroopers. Afterwards they sailed back inland, only to see the island being occupied again. The troops now marched to TOULON, barked new ships and sailed back to the island. Here they arrived with only two SP left due to naval artillery fire.

Most of the forces were concentrated in the north. During the first couple of rounds a fierce battle raged against armored German formations. Once they were destroyed a race west begun. A small force (1st AT, 2nd artillery) broke off and drove north towards 'Objective-3' together with several aux units. The Germans fought hard, but in the end they were overwhelmed.

Most units (1st tank, 1st and 4th infantry, 1st artillery and 1st recon) drove for AIX EN PROVERNCE that was easily taken. Just as I was preparing to continue the advance the Germans launched a massive counterattack that forced me to a halt. Once that had been dealt with taking 'Objective-1' and 'Objective-2' was no problem. The final drive went towards MARSEILLES that was taken in a pincer movement. During the attack Luftwaffe succeeded in sinking most of the French fleet in the Marseilles bay. AIX EN PROVENCE held out against a minor German attack.
BV with one turn to go, but Marseilles fell with seven turns to go. It was only because I had to capture Parqueralles again that I lost time.

Comments:
This was a nice medium length campaign. The scenarios showed great variety and the aggressive AI made many scenarios very intense. At 100% the campaign was a little too easy for an experienced player. I kept hitting the cap and was constantly able to OS several units, which made many scenarios quite easy. The BP version is not the best for French equipment. Often only limited choices were available. Still the overall impression is that this is a very good campaign and the best (and only : ) French campaign for PG2. Overall I rate it 9/10.
